Dear Cruisers,
As soon as you step off the ship in Civitavecchia, just a 10-15 minute walk from the cruise terminal, you’ll discover one of the most authentic and lively historic centers on the Lazio coast. With its narrow alleys, elegant squares, and historic buildings, Civitavecchia’s old town offers that genuine Italian atmosphere many cruisers are looking for: welcoming, vibrant, and full of surprises. At its very heart stands the beautiful Fontana Vanvitelli.
The Vanvitelli Fountain: Jewel of the Historic Center
Located in Piazza Matteotti, the Vanvitelli Fountain is one of the most photographed and beloved monuments in the city.
Designed in 1740 by the famous architect Luigi Vanvitelli (the same architect of the Royal Palace of Caserta).
Made of travertine, with an octagonal basin and a central sculptural group featuring three putti holding the coat of arms of Civitavecchia.
Elegant, harmonious, and perfectly integrated into the 19th-century square.
Beautifully lit in the evening, creating a magical atmosphere ideal for photos.
It is the perfect meeting point for both cruisers and locals — all walks through the center start from here.
What to See in the Historic Center
Walking from the port inland you will discover:
Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II: the city’s elegant living room, with bars, restaurants, and the impressive Town Hall building.
Corso Centocelle: the main pedestrian street full of shops, gelaterias, and typical eateries.
Via Garibaldi and Via XX Settembre: charming alleys with historic shops, noble palaces, and picturesque views.
Piazza Regina Margherita: the hub of the daily market and the Covered Market.
Arco di Clemente XIV and remains of the ancient city gates.
The atmosphere is that of a typical Italian port town: lively but not chaotic, with friendly residents and a relaxed pace.
